Ok. I'Ve Got My Keywords. Now What?

Okay, so you have found your keywords. Now what?

Well, you need to know where to put them!

Here is a list of the best places to use your keywords on your web pages to give you that much need SEO boost.

Title tag
This is an extremely important tag and it certainly should include your keywords. I've lost count of how many home pages I have seen with the Title of "home page".

The title is also what appears when your page is listed by the search engines and so it needs to be compelling to the human eye as well as include your keywords for the search engines.

Ideally the title should be no more than 100 characters including spaces. Google displays unto 66 characters, Yahoo much more.

Also, get your main keyword in early in the title text. For example, on a web page aimed at offering web optimising advice to small businesses and the keyword for the page is "web optimising" I might use the following Title:

Web Optimising for Small Businesses

Alternatively if my keyword for the page is "small businesses" I might switch the Title to be:

Small Business Web Optimising

Description Tag

Some search engines check the description tag to get a good understanding of what the web page is about. So you must include your keywords in this tag. It's important to remember that your description tag is frequently the test displayed when your web page is listed by the search engines. So again it needs to be compelling for your potential visitors.

Headings

The heading tags (ie: h1, h2, etc) are considered of importance by the search engines and therefore you should include your keywords in these headings whenever you can. You should certainly make sure the main heading of the page (ie: the H1 tag) contains your keyword.

Content

The main copy of your web page should also use your keywords. However it is important to remember that the copy is there to convert your customer to do something once they have arrived at the web page. If the copy does not guide them to taking the action you want them to take then getting your customer to the page has all been for nothing. So, write the page with the purpose in mind and try to work the keywords in naturally into the content.

Incidentally some pundits state that you should include your keywords near the top of the page as this effects the rating the search engines apply to your page. I’m not sure if that is true, however if I were a visitor to your site that found you through keywords on a search engine I would find it welcoming to find those keywords early in my reading of your page.

Links

Use your keywords in any links to your page from within your own web site and ideally where you can on links from external web sites. Search engines following these links will pick up on these keywords as being relevant to your page.

Alt tag

On all your images, use the alt tag and include your keywords in the text. Obviously the text needs to be relevant to the image. Using the alt tag is important for addressing web site accessibility which is now a legal requirement in many countries. Also, search engines read this text and use it for indexing your site.

Follow the guidelines in this article on how to use keywords to optimise your web site and I’m sure you will soon see increased traffic to your site.

Search Engine Optimization Tips: Rank High in the Search Engines for Your Keywords

Every internet marketer or webmaster aims to have their websites in the first page of the organic search results for their targeted keywords. In this article, I’m going to reveal some vital search engine optimization tips that will boost your chances of being listed in the Top 10 results for your chosen keywords.

SEO has its advantages. It’s free, unlike pay per click where you have to pay every time someone visits your site, regardless of whether they buy anything or not. Being listed in the organic search results may also attract more visitors to your site than the paid listings; people are not inclined to click on ads and prefer to click on natural search items.

The downside of SEO is that search engines change their algorithms often; but don’t worry. By following the search engine optimization tips below, you’ll stand a much bigger chance of being listed in the Top 10 for your desired keywords and keeping your position for a long time to come.

Keywords must be in the anchor text of incoming links.

A different site linking to you counts as a vote in the eyes of the search engines. And if the anchor text of the incoming links has your keywords in it, then you will have better chances of ranking for those keywords.

Keywords must be within the title tag.

The search engines place great emphasis on the title tag; it tells them what your website’s topic is about. Place your keywords at the start of the title tag for best results. The title tag must not be longer than 60 characters.

Your link should contain your keywords.

Having your keywords in your link will help you get ranked for those keywords. For example, if you want to rank high for the keywords "website copywriting," your link should look like this: http://yoursite.com/website-copywriting.htm.

Play it safe with your keyword density.

There is no specific rule regarding the "right" keyword density, because the search engines change their algorithms often. There have been theories that Google considers a keyword density of more than 2% to be spamming, but Yahoo and MSN are fine with up to 5%.

Different SEO experts have mixed opinions on the ideal keyword density; so don’t focus all your energies on this. Just mention your keywords near the beginning and write naturally. To be on the safe side, aim to have no more than 2%, but space out your keywords from each other so they would look natural in the eyes of the search engines.

Put your keywords in headings (within the H1 tags, H2 tags, etc.)

The search engines place great emphasis on words between headings (H1, H2, etc.) so it would be a smart idea to have your keywords placed within them. Just make sure that the keywords are suitable to the content and you’re not “forcing” them.

Put bold, strong, or italicize tags between your keywords.

The search engines take more notice of words that are either bolded or italicized, so placing your keywords within the bold, strong, or i tags can help you rank higher for those keywords.

Put your keywords near the start of your content.

Although this does not count as much as the search engine optimization tips above, putting your keywords at the beginning of your content (not necessarily html code) is a good SEO strategy because the search engines place great emphasis on the first few parts of your webpage.

Put your keywords in metatags.

Google overlooks metatags, but Yahoo and MSN still read them. So spend a few seconds putting your keywords in metatags to add to your search engine credits.

Put your keywords within alt tags.

The search engines can't read graphics or images, but they can read the text descriptions within the alt tag. If you have images on your site, fill in the alt tag with your keywords, but don't overdo it.

Target specialized keywords.

Some keywords have very high competition that you have lesser chances of ranking for them. If you have a target audience or niche, it might be a good idea to focus on those keywords that are more targeted and have less competition. For example, instead of having a competitive keyword phrase like “jobs bartending,” you can focus on “alabama bartending jobs” if your target audience is in Alabama.

Observe LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing).

Don’t let that technical-sounding phrase put you off. To explain it simply, the search engines look for synonyms or words related to your target keywords to determine the relevancy of your content to your keywords. The search engines place more emphasis on those pages that have words related to the keywords as opposed to pages having only the targeted keywords. For example, if your target keyword is “self-hypnosis,” your webpage would have better search results if you have related words such as “auto-suggestion” and “visualization” rather than having only “self-hypnosis” in your document. For LSI suggestions, use Google Sets at
http://labs.google.com/sets

Observe keyword proximity.

Keyword proximity is the closeness of the keywords to each other. For example, you're optimizing your webpage for the keywords "marketing strategies." If you have "marketing" in the first sentence and "strategies" in the 4th sentence, it still counts but doesn't have as much effect as having "marketing strategies" together without any words in between. Keyword proximity is used for keyword phrases that have 2 or more words.

Never engage in keyword stuffing.

Don’t fill your content with keywords unrelated to your topic. This will have a negative impact on your search results for other targeted keywords. Never stuff your content with keywords deliberately, especially those unrelated to your content. If the search engines see you filling keywords in an unnatural way, you might get banned from the search results.

Hope these search engine optimization tips help you get first page rankings for your chosen keywords. Best of luck to your SEO efforts!

Beating Your Competition In The Search Engines!

Search engine optimization (SEO) is actually more complicated than most people realize. After all, not every business needs results from the search engines. Some businesses only need local results. Then there are businesses that rely on search engines for 100% of their revenue.

Once you figure out what your basic needs are, then you have to determine who your real online competition is. In traditional terms, your competition is the business down the street. On the Internet, however, your competition is the website that is beating you out on your keywords. Your competition might not even sell the same products or services as you. If he is getting your search engine traffic, he is the competition.

Know Your Keywords

Your keywords are your “turf” on the Internet. Your success depends on two things. First, what are the keywords that represent your products or services? You should be able to figure that out on your own. Secondly, what are the keywords your clients are searching for when they want the products or services you offer?

Let’s say that you sell cars. If you sell Chevrolet vehicles, you can easily guess a few keywords. It is not a surprise that “Chevrolet dealership” is a key phrase. Since your prospective customers are generally searching within one city, you do not have to beat out the whole world for “Chevrolet Dealership”. You must have to beat out the local competitors. Phrases such as “Chevrolet Dealership Houston” or “Houston Chevrolet Dealership”, will be easier to target and will produce your best results.

Know the Competition

Search Google.com, Yahoo.com, msn.com, and see who comes up in the top five results for your most important keywords. It does not matter if those sites sell cars. You want to be on top for your phrase so whatever comes up … that is your competition.

Beat Them at Their Own Game

Analyze those sites for the most common SEO tactics. Then whatever they are doing, you should one-up them in every respect.

Here are a few tips on what to look for:

Keyword frequency – How many times do they use the words you are targeting? Count them. Use those words and phrases more frequently and more times.

Inbound links – How many links do they have coming in? Search google.com using this format: link:www.anythinginternet.com

Prominent Keywords – Bolded keywords, keywords in the website address, keywords in the title bar, and keywords in headings are all considered important.

There are many other things to look for. I recommend you hire a professional SEO consultant if search engine results are important to you. These tips will help you optimize a few of the most obvious parts of your web page. There are a lot more things to do. You want your keywords in your page title, your META tags, and you want to optimize every page on your website.

Increasing the number of inbound links can be a lot of work. If your competition has a lot of these, you should hire a professional to help you compete. Experts can add hundreds of new inbound links for you quite easily.

If you make changes to your website, prepare to wait a long time for those changes to be 100% effective. Some things could take six months to become fully effective.

Search Friendly Content Rules!

If you want your site to reach stay at the top of search engine results, you need to use compelling keywords and optimize them to your advantage. To do this, you have to put in the appropriate keywords anywhere you can so that your site would effectively rise up in the rankings of search engine results.

Getting on top of search engine results is one of the best ways to be in full view of the public in the internet. It will give you more customers because when people search, they find you and would almost always look up what it is that you sell and because you are on the top of the search results, they will navigate to your site for a look-see. Aside from keywords, having the necessary content gets you more customers as well. To implement this successfully, your keywords have to be embedded in informative content so that your prospective customers will get useful information about how to use your product, where to use it and more. Don't just fill up your site with words and phrases, otherwise the first time a potential client sees it, they'd leave in a hurry and you won't have any clients in the long run.

Doing business in the internet hinges on one very important variable -- information. People surf the web for information on almost anything. This is to the advantage of the internet e-preneur because you already know what people want then the next step is to provide them with it. For your site to be successful and highly visible, it needs to have informational web content that customers would trust. You have to provide this information through newsletter, e-mails, content and other forms but with one thing in common -- they have to be useful and informative. It has to be done in such a way that shows you are an authority and that you know what you are talking about otherwise your efforts would amount to nothing and just wheel spinning! When your customer takes the time to read the information on your site, that is your chance to convince them that the product or service you are selling is what they need. You have to continually keep your site's information content up to date so that clients would always return and look at your site week after week on a regular basis.

Writing informative articles is one of the best ways to make your site rich in content. However, you need to make sure that your articles are informative and entertaining to the readers and that they have a direct relation to your market. You can even expand on this by writing small articles about each of the aspects of your general subject matter so you do not fall into the trap of snowing in your audience. You can also add related news about your subject matter thereby enhancing not only the content of your site but your credibility as well.

Frequently modifying and adjusting your content with new information helps keep your site competitive

How To Increase Search Engine Traffic

The key to increase search engine traffic is quite simple. Follow this formula and you will be successful:

1. Research high traffic keywords in your niche

Use Word Tracker's free keyword research tool and identified some long-tailed keywords that don't have a lot of competition. Simply type in the keywords from Word Tracker into the Google search engine and note the 'results' on the right-hand side. Any keyword phrase with over 50 searches per day and under 500,000 results in Google is a pretty good and will increase your search engine traffic and ranking. Of course, there are far better, so don't stop on the first one that jumps out at you, get a good list.

2. Write articles for your website or blog that include a keyword phrase in them 2-4% of the time. Increase search engine traffic by out writing your competitors. Most webmasters are bad at writing keyword targeted articles, which makes it easy for you to out rank them.

Make sure to put your keyword phrase in your title and header with other words to boost interest. For example, for "Aluminum Bats" I'd put something like, "Aluminum Bats - Whack! Swing Away Kid" or something that stresses benefit like, "Now Hit Farther than Ever with Aluminum Bats". You want to get clicked on to increase your search engine traffic, so a good title is crucial, both for ranking well and getting visitors to click.

3. Now you need to get these pages noticed and build up some link juice. Search engines love sites that have lots of links pointing to them and that will increase your ranking and traffic. You can do this by posting on other blogs, forums, trading links, etc., but this can be a long and time consuming process.

If you want fast results without paying then I'd suggest using a backlinks tool to save you time and build viral links naturally, so you can focus on writing more articles to increase search engine traffic to your website.

SEO - Insider Tips To Creating SEO Keywords And Phrases

If you have been practicing search engine optimization you probably already know that it is a good idea to include quotes in your keywords and keywords phrases to make your web copy more attractive to the search engines. You probably also know that is a good idea to put things that your site specifically sells in quotes so that the search engine spiders see you as having exclusive or specialized content or information. However there are a few more tips that come along with creating SEO keywords and phrases that are less well known.

Many SEO experts advise practicing word stemming. This means that when you do find a keyword that works that you should not hesitate to use it in the words different forms. For example take the phrase “SEO optimization”. You might also want to use phrases such as SEO optimizing, SEO optimized and SEO optimizers which branch out linguistically from your original keyword.

Another big tip is to avoid using what are called kill terms. This is just a phrase for conjunctions and prepositions that are largely ignored by the search engines. Common kill terms include a, an and, at, by, for, in, it, of, the too, to, web and with.

Yet another tip is to be aware of case sensitive keywords. When in doubt you should always submit them in lower case. However when it comes to names and places you might also want to put things in their proper cases. For instance if you are searching for Frank Kern you will want to put in Frank Kern as well as frank kern. Some experts even advise putting in a keyword all in caps as in FRANK KERN as many individuals have stuck capital key caps when they search. The search engine that is thought to be most sensitive to case is Alta Vista.

Tips On Using On-Page SEO To Improve Your Search Engine Rankings

Tips and techniques on how to improve your search engine ranking using on-page seo.

Enlarge ImageYou've laboured, sweated and poured lotsa love into designing and building your website. And phewee...ain't it just the prettiest thing for sore eyes! But just as in real life--so does it go for the online world--beauty will only get you so far. So you've got to put that site to work! And how do you do that? Get it out there...put it right in the bulls eye of the search engines! That's the way you're going to get traffic to your site. And just in case you don't know, traffic (specifically targeted traffic) is the life blood of any internet business.

By the close of 2005 the big kahuna...the absolute capo di tutti frutti of search was Google which commanded a whopping 46-47 percent of all searches conducted online. The runner up was Yahoo with about 25 % and followed distantly by MSN who conducted about 11.4 % of all searches. AOL boasted a paltry 6.9 % which still came to a not insubstantial 350 million searches. Searches through Google were a mind-sweltering 2.4 billion! Contrastingly MSN is the king of superfast indexing whilst Google is the snail in the site-indexing race. Yahoo once again falls in the middle of the two. So bear in mind, if your site is new and you're optimizing for Google don't forget about the other Big Two search engines (Yahoo and MSN) which can send some rather decent traffic your way in the meanwhile.

There are two types of optimization techniques that will determine your website's standing with the search engines. They are: On-Page Search Optimization and Off-Page Search Optimization. This article will give you pointers on On-Page Optimization.

On-Page Optimization of Your Site

Keywords

The first thing you must learn to do is to treat each webpage on your site as (if not quite independent) an autonomous entity. In essence this means a different title for each page and targeting different keywords for a particular page. Let's say for example your site is about vitamins and has a number of different pages for the various vitamins. Your home page (index page) would target general keywords such as vitamin, health supplement, dietary supplement, food vitamin etc. But a page with content about vitamin C should not target such generalized terms. It should target keywords (phrases) specifically related to vitamin c such as: vitamin c, c vitamin, ascorbic acid, benefit of vitamin c and so on. The title of each particular page should begin with your most valued (most searched for) keyword. Once again using vitamin C as an example, your webpage title should begin with Vitamin C and not something like 'All the facts about vitamin c'. If you actually design and construct your website from scratch you can even go a step further. Name your webpage files starting with the targeted keyword. Once again, taking your vitamin site as an example, for pages relevant to vitamin C, name them accordingly. So say one of the pages is about the benefits of vitamin C, name that page with a searched for keyword or phrase pertaining to the benefits of vitamin C; e.g., vitamincbenefits.htm. So how do you know which keywords are regularly searched for? Don't worry at the end of this article you'll be supplied with a list of great and free keyword search tools.

Nobody gets to see the name of your file other than you the webmaster and the various search engine robots. So it doesn't matter how awkward they look or sound because unlike people a search engine robot is not concerned with the aesthetics of a thing.

Keyword Density Versus Content.

While making your webpage as attractive as possible to the search engines bear in mind you're doing this to get traffic...human traffic. So the content (copy) on your pages should read attractively to your human visitors while also appealing to the search engine robots. In this respect keyword optimization is a fine balancing act and if push ever comes to shove you'd be better off weighing this balance in favor of your human visitors. After all what's the point of having a ton of traffic passing through your site and hardly any of it performing your most desired action (visitors buying something, signing up etc) all because of that lousy copy you wrote with the search engine robots foremost in mind!

Over-Optimization

There are also other very important factors to consider when optimizing for keywords. How many keywords (phrases) should you consider for a given page and how many times should that/those words appear on that page. Okay, the first thing that you have to understand is that there is such a thing as a website being Over-Optimized! You may believe that the greater the optimization the better but the reality is more complicated. You see the search engine algorithms take into account the keyword density of a particular page, and by doing in-depth analyses of the topmost websites for a given keyword (for Google, speculation puts the ideal keyword density at between 1.5 - 1.8 % while MSN runs up to 3.0 %, with consistent ole Yahoo somewhere in the middle) they will know that something just isn't right if your website boasts a keyword density of 10%. This is know as spamming the search engines and sends up an immediate red flag alert.

So what's the penalty? Your site won't get the ranking it perhaps deserves if it's new, and if it is an established site it will most likely be taken down a notch or two. Another factor to consider if your site is new, is that Google routinely sequesters new sites (a process called sandboxing) until the site can establish value and credibility. This is all part of the on-going battle between search engines (trying to deliver valuable and worthwhile information to search queries) and the spam websites that offer no substantial value whatsoever, but are keyword dense one-page websites with the sole goal of making money online in some manner or other.

What are SEO keywords?

An article looking at keywords within websites, and why their correct use in these sites content is so important. The article also looks at how failing to use keywords can have a negative impact on your website.

SEO Search Engine Optimisation is a method of attracting traffic to a website through the use of text within the website. Within this text are keywords which relate to the search that is being performed. These search results are classed as being ‘natural’ as the language within the text flows correctly and easily picked up by the spiders that search a website’s content in order for it to appear on a search list.

SEO is a hugely important aspect of a website’s marketing and can be the difference between getting 5-10 hits per day and thousands of hits. Everyone wants their website to be ranked highly on search engines and many people will go to great lengths to make sure that the site’s

SEO is of top quality. The text that is contained on a website needs to contain keywords that are likely to be used in searches for a particular topic or roduct. These keywords are often the name of the topic or product itself.

For example if a person wanted to find out about long haired cats they would type the phrase ‘Long haired cats’ into their chosen search engine. This ould then start to crawl or spider the Internet looking for all the websites that had these words contained within them. If a website had the exact phrase ‘long haired cats’ on it, preferably several times, then it would rank highly on the search results. The words ‘long’ ‘haired’ and ‘cats’ all separately would not really have much relevance to the search results, after all these could present
websites about long hair, or just cats in general and the person searching would find these of little or no value to them. This is where the use of SEO comes into play. If you were the owner of a website that was about long haired cats, you would obviously have this term contained within it, or so you would think. However, if you are not aware of SEO you might not use this term at all in your websites content, preferring to use breed names instead, or it might only be
used once or twice. This would result in low rankings and very little traffic to your site.

Keywords are easy enough to think of on a certain topic, but they do require some thought. However, the effort put into thinking about keywords is minor compared to the amount of traffic they can provide for a website. It is important to think about what your website is about and then think of all the terms are the subject that you can. Then from these you can decide on the best keywords, the ones that people are more likely to search for, and use them within the text on the site. Keywords do not need to be long and difficult to spell, in fact the more words that are difficult to spell the worse your rankings could be as many people might not know how to spell them. Some search engines will provide you with the correct spellings and results but it is best to go for simple words that are easily to understand and spell.

Once you have come up with your keywords you then just write the text of your website with those words contained. Good SEO is easy to read and not stuffed with keywords, as this can lead to your site being banned from directories as it is seen as using unfair tactics to gain a high ranking. By using keywords correctly in your text you can achieve a high ranking and attract many visitors to your site.

The basics of SEM, SEO and PPC

What is SEM?
Search Engine Marketing or SEM is a range of marketing techniques used to increase a website’s visibility on search engines and directories so that it will attract visits from its target audience. SEM includes SEO, PPC or a combination of these and other search related activities.

What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines, therefore increasing the website’s ranking. It takes time to build and maintain a good SEO campaign but the results are worth it. SEO uses a combination of tools techniques, such as modifying site content, structure and code using relevant keywords, link building and utilising web standards.

What is PPC?
Pay Per Click Advertising or PPC is an advertising technique used on websites, especially search engines. The advertiser pays an agreed amount for each click delivered to their site from a link or listing on a website or search engine. In the UK, Google AdWords and Yahoo! Search Marketing are the main providers of PPC services.

What are Keywords and Keyphrases?
A keyword or keyphrase is a word or a series of words used by search engines when searching for relevant web pages. For example, if someone was looking for a cookbook, they would type in the keyword “cookbook”. Before your website is optimised, it is important to choose the correct keywords and keyphrases, as there is no point in optimising your website for keywords or keyphrases that no one searches on.

Our website has just gone live – why can’t I find it on search engines?

The internet is a very crowded place and as there is no central location to find information, users rely primarily on search engines to find what they want. If your website has been optimised and has been created using web standards, then your website should be going through the process of being indexed by the search engines. Search engines are constantly crawling the web for new websites and are continually adding new websites to their indexes. If your website has not been optimised or does not have any quality inbound links, then your chances of gaining good rankings are significantly reduced.

We have just had our website optimised – why can’t I find it on search engines?

SEO is something that takes time and needs to be consistent. Search engines give rankings based upon many factors, such as age, quality of content, appropriateness of keywords and keyphrases and links. For example, if a website has been online for a year and has had consistent content, high quality links and has not done any underhanded tactics to try and rank higher, the search engines will give rankings to this type of website over a newer website, as the search engines trust the older site.

How can we get an immediate result?
The only way your website will be ranked immediately is by using PPC. However, PPC does not grow organically like SEO and your ad will only be shown at the times you choose to pay for it. If you have the budget for both PPC and SEO, then it is best to do both in tandem, so that you get the immediate results from PPC and the long term sustainable results from SEO.

SEO Search Engine Optimization Answers

Search engine optimization, or SEO search engine optimization as it is also called, is an approach for marketing and promoting your website that is focused on the technology behind the search engines that determines how and why sites are listed, or ranked, for certain search terms.

Search engine optimization should not be approached as a hobby or just some kind of kids game. When approached professionally, it can yield excellent results for you and have you competing for searchers attention on the first page of search engine rankings on the top search engines.

The primary purpose of SEO search engine optimization is to create traffic for your site that is considered organic. This means that your site has been shown in the search result list as a matter of relevancy as opposed to it being a there because you paid for the listing through pay per click advertising.

When people use one of the top search engines, they are presented with a mixture of paid results and organic listings. Those doing the searches are nine times more likely to click on the non-paid search results, which is an excellent illustration of why search engine optimization is so important and powerful.

You can certainly kick off the marketing efforts for your website by using paid search marketing methods, as this will get you traffic quickly, but of course you are paying for each visitor to your site. If you have not tested your site and know that it has a high conversion ratio, or a high percentage of visitors who make a purchase when visiting your site, then pay per click can be a very costly route to take.

However, if you focus your paid search efforts on long tail keywords that are relevant to your site, you will have less competition for those terms and you will be able to get a high position of a paid listing for a much lower cost per click. This can often be a good strategy to begin testing your conversion ratio, and once you have established a good conversion rate, it might still be profitable to go after more competitive, higher cost, search terms.

One of the critical components to being able to effectively carry out successful pay per click marketing strategies is good keyword research. Taking time to study related keyword terms and phrases will reveal keywords that you can target that have less competition, or that might even be a better fit and more relevant for your particular site. Not doing proper research into related keywords can end up costing you time and money and lead to frustration in your marketing endeavors.

The information that you gain from paid search marketing can also be very beneficial in your SEO search engine optimization efforts. You can use your conversion rates for different keyword terms or keyword phrases to help you know what terms you should optimize around so that you can improve your organic search engine rankings for those terms.

Many webmasters find that the best approach is to use paid search marketing for quick results and fast feedback and putting SEO search engine marketing tactics to work for a more long term strategy, which allows them to take advantage of the benefits and strengths of both strategies.
