White Hat and Black Hat

White Hat and Black Hat are two methods used in SEO. White hats tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas black hats anticipate that their sites may eventually be banned either temporarily or permanently once the search engines discover what they are doing.

White SEO conforms to the search engines' guidelines and involves no deception. As the search engine guidelines are not written as a series of rules or commandments, this is an important distinction to note. White hat SEO is not just about following guidelines, but is about ensuring that the content a search engine indexes and subsequently ranks is the same content a user will see.

Generally, White hat SEO creates content for real users, not for search engines, and then making that content easily accessible to the spiders, rather than attempting to trick the algorithm from its intended purpose. White hat SEO is not exact like website promotion, but they are similar in certain ways.

Black hat SEO attempts to improve rankings in ways that are disapproved of by the search engines, or involve deception. One black hat technique uses text that is hidden, either as text colored similar to the background, in an invisible div, or positioned off screen. Another method gives a different page depending on whether the page is being requested by a human visitor or a search engine, a technique known as cloaking.

Search engines may penalize sites they discover using black hat methods. Such penalties can be applied either automatically by the search engines' algorithms.

One example was the February 2006 Google removal of both BMW Germany and Ricoh Germany for use of black hat SEO. Both companies, however, quickly apologized, fixed the offending pages, and were restored to Google's list.

Why Early Identification of Keyphrases are Important to your Websites Development

Having a successful profitable website can depend on many factors, none more important than effective keyphrases selection. If you get your keyphrases wrong then it can have a major effect on your website.

As SEO or search engine optimisation can take months to take effect, finding out six months down the road that you have selected poor keyphrases that aren't returning anything on your investment can be a hard pill to swallow. That's why it's very important you get it right from the get go.

When doing your keyphrase research try and think of targeted keyphrases because if you go for the more general keyphrases you will find that they are harder to get good listings for and the traffic will be of poor quality.

Let's go into this in a little more detail, let's take a fictitious company called Tartan Paint. Now you may think that "paint" may be a great keyphrase to use but in fact no. Doing a search on Google for "paint" yields 188,000,000 results. Now this keyphrase would be hard to get onto page one for and is far to general for Tartan Paints as they only sell tartan paint, and someone looking for any other kind of paint won't find this site very useful.

So a far more targeted keyphrase would be of course "tartan paint" and as the time of writing this article Google yielded 168,000 results which is a far more achievable keyphrase. This may be a very simple example but I think you get the point.

If you are looking for a good website design Edinburgh I found this company to be of great help and can help you to increase website traffic.

Use your imagination and try to drill down to specific targeted keyphrases and your traffic will be far more targeted. Using the Google keyword tool can be a good place to check if your chosen keyphrases are actually been typed into there search engine. Some other good tools are Keyword Discovery and Wordtracker, although the later two tools aren't free but are a great resource for finding good long tailed targeted keyphrases.

If you're having trouble coming up with keyphrases try asking your friends and work colleges for ideas, as this could discover some hidden jems that you may not have thought of. Just remember that keyphrases are the foundation of your SEO campaign and need to be taken seriously.

Google Tells You How To Get Top Search Engine Rankings

Did you know that the Google search engine actually tells you how to get a top search engine ranking? Everyone thinks it's a mysterious secret. However, it actually isn't all that mysterious at all. In fact, if you do a search for "Google Webmaster Guidelines" they explain what they look for when they add a web site to their search index and rank a web site in the search listings. By following the suggestions that Google provides, you can achieve top search engine rankings for keywords related to your target market without having to resort to tricks to manipulate search engine rankings.

First off, understand that the last thing you want to do is use tricks to manipulate search engine rankings. Also known as "black hat techniques" these tricks will do nothing more than make Google mad at you and get your web site eliminated from the search engines completely.

Remember, the purpose of Google is to provide relevant content to the end user, who is the person who is performing the search at a given point and time. What you want to do is to help Google facilitate that process, not try to fight against Google by creating a bunch of junk just to try to manipulate the search engine rankings.

You can do a search as I suggested above and read what Google wants yourself, however, I will highlight a few things that will help you in your search for top search engine rankings on the Google Search Engine.

The best way to get listed in the search engines is to create a very content rich web site. One of the factors that Google uses to determine search engine position is a concept called page rank. This concept describes the way that Google ranks each web page based on a variety of factors. One factor that determines page rank is the content on your web page. One of the things that Google LOVES is a web site that has lots and lots of content. Therefore, if you want to get ranked high in the search engines, a great way to do that is to create a web page that has a large amount of content.

One of the best ways to get Google to rank your web site high is to have relevant web sites link to your web site. If there are web sites that have content similar to the content that you have on your web site and those web sites link to your web site, then you significantly increase the chances of your web site getting a higher ranking in the search engine. It's even better if the relevant web site already has high placement in Google's search engine.

Another suggestion that Google makes is to get your web site submitted to relevant directories. This is also an excellent way to increase your search engine rankings for your web site. One area that is overlooked is niche related directories. By submitting your web site to directories that are related to the niche your web site covers, Google looks favorably upon your web site and will give you a higher search engine placement as a result.

In short, take some time out and look to see exactly what it is that Google is looking for. Then go ahead and give Google what they want. There's an old saying "If you help enough people get what they want, you can have what you want." This saying also applies to Google. Help Google get what they want (which is quality content in their search engine) and you can have whatever you want (which is a high search engine ranking in Google).

5 Tips to Improve Search Rank

Optimizing your website for search engines can be a time consuming and costly process if you don't know what you are doing. Utilize these five search engine optimization tips provided by a professional SEO firm to improve your organic search engine rank.

1. Watch Your Keyword Density

Keyword density refers to the number of times a keyword is used on a web page compared to the total amount of words on the page. For example, if your web page is 100 words long and you use the keyword "SEO" eight times on this page, the keyword density of the search term, "SEO" would be 8%. When writing content for your website, be sure the keyword density of your content never exceeds 15%. The density you should use varies from source to source, but 15% is generally the highest density any source will suggest.

2. Build Relevant Links

Building links to your website is a time consuming process that is absolutely necessary for high search engine rank. If you don't build links to your website, your search results will reflect with low rankings. However, you should also pay attention to where you are placing your links. The quality of the websites that contain links to your website is taken into account by search engines, as is the relevancy of the website and the web page to your website and your web page. Relevancy is very important. If you're just spamming up unrelated websites with links to your website, search engines are going to catch on and lower your search rank.

3. Use Headers on Web Pages

It is common to see new webmasters bold their headlines and increase their size so that consumers will be sure to notice them. However, there is a much better way to make your headlines, titles, and subheadings visible to consumers, which will also improve your search engine rank. Headers, such as H1, H2, H3, and so on, are used to not only make headlines stick out for consumers, but headers also alter the size of the headlines according to their natural order in the article.

Headers should be used appropriately. While the keyword in the H1 heading will be viewed as the most important header by search engines, it is not savvy to place more than one H1 header on a web page. You can, however, use multiple H2, H3, and so on. Most web pages only get to H3, but try to make it to H6 if possible, without looking like a spammer.

4. Reduce Web Page Loading Time

If your website loads very slowly, consumers are likely to leave your website before they find out why they should stick around. Your website may have images that cause your page to load slowly. Other factors include the amount of code on your website, such as javascript; excessively large web pages or even a slow server can slow your website down as well. For your initial step, you will need to test the loading time of your website, which can be done for free on our website.

5. Write Your Own Content

Copying content is just plagiarism. It wasn't okay in 8th grade and it isn't okay on the internet. Search engines store every web page they come across, so if you copy content from another website and place it on your own website, your search rank is not likely to improve very much. You may see a slight improvement due to an increased amount of content on your website, but this improvement will pale in comparison to the results you can obtain with unique content. If you are not the "writing type," hire a search engine optimization firm to write your content for you.
